Triangle Rabbit Snail (Tylomelania sinobartfeldi)
The Triangle Rabbit Snail is a rare freshwater snail from the rivers of Sulawesi, Indonesia, recognized for its distinctive angular “triangle-shaped” shell, dark coloration, and signature rabbit-like facial tentacles. Although smaller than some of its larger Tylomelania relatives, it shares the same elephant-like facial features and gentle personality. Calm, active, and visually striking, it makes a functional and exotic addition to planted aquariums and shrimp tanks.
How They Help Your Aquarium
Triangle Rabbit Snails are peaceful grazers and natural clean-up crew members.
- Graze on algae, biofilm, and detritus
- Help keep substrate and hardscape clean
- Eat leftover food before it breaks down
- Completely plant-safe and shrimp-safe
They work slowly and steadily, making them ideal for mature, stable tanks rather than brand-new setups.
Care & Tank Requirements
Triangle Rabbit Snails prefer warm, mineral-rich water and consistent conditions. They’re hardy and beginner-friendly once established.
Tank Size
- Minimum: 5 gallons for a single snail (since they're smaller than other rabbit snails, they can be housed in nano tanks)
- Recommended: 10+ gallons for long-term stability or small groups
Water Parameters
These snails thrive in slightly alkaline, mineralized water similar to Neo-style or Sulawesi setups.
- Temperature: 74–86°F (24–30°C)
- pH: 7.0–8.5
- GH: 6–15
- KH: 2–8
- TDS: 100–300 ppm
Calcium and minerals support strong shell growth. Very soft or acidic water may cause shell wear over time.
Setup Notes
- Soft sand or fine gravel substrate
- Provide driftwood, smooth rocks, and calm grazing areas
- Gentle to moderate flow with good oxygenation
- Avoid aggressive or snail-nipping fish
Diet
While they graze naturally throughout the aquarium, Triangle Rabbit Snails benefit from supplemental feeding.
They eat:
- Algae and biofilm
- Invertebrate or algae wafers
- Shrimp/snail pellets
- Decaying plant matter
- Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, kale)
- Occasional calcium-rich foods or cuttlebone
Feed lightly and remove uneaten food to maintain water quality.
Breeding Information
Triangle Rabbit Snails reproduce slowly compared to common pest snails.
- Livebearers that produce one fully-formed baby at a time
- No larval stage
- Very slow, controlled reproduction
- Breeding occurs naturally in stable, mineral-rich tanks
This makes them suitable for aquariums where population control is important.
Compatibility
Triangle Rabbit Snails are peaceful and community-friendly.
Compatible with:
- Neocaridina shrimp
- Amano shrimp
- Small, peaceful community fish
- Other non-aggressive snails
Avoid loaches, puffers, crayfish, cichlids, or species known to nip tentacles.

These have some imperfection in the shell, they are about 3/4 of an inch and don't get much bigger than a dime when full grown.
