Green Babaulti Shrimp (Caridina cf. babaulti)
Add rare color and personality to your aquarium with Green Babaulti Shrimp (Caridina cf. babaulti) — a unique and highly variable Caridina species known for its shifting shades of green, olive, yellow, and even occasional orange or reddish tones. Often called “Poison Green Shrimp” because of their intense coloration, these shrimp stand out beautifully against dark substrates and hardscape.
Unlike most Caridina species, Green Babaulti can thrive in Neocaridina-style parameters and are considered hardier and more adaptable than bee shrimp. They also will not crossbreed with Neocaridina or with Caridina species outside the Babaulti group, making them an excellent choice for mixed shrimp tanks.
Why Choose Green Babaulti Shrimp?
Chameleon-Like Color Variation
Green Babaulti can shift color depending on mood, environment, and substrate — from deep mossy green to olive, yellowish, or brownish tones.
Caridina That Works in Neo Parameters
More tolerant than typical Caridina, they adapt well to moderately hard water and mixed invertebrate setups.
No Crossbreeding With Neocaridina
Safe to keep alongside Neocaridina lines without risking hybrid colonies.
Hardy, Peaceful & Active
Once established, they are resilient scavengers and excellent algae grazers.
Live Arrival Guarantee
Orders are packed with care and include extras to help cover any DOA losses.

Tank Setup & Compatibility
- Tank Size: 5+ gallons (10+ for breeding colonies)
- Habitat: Moss, wood, rocks, botanicals, and textured plants for grazing
- Behavior: Peaceful; more confident in larger groups
Compatible Tank Mates
- Neocaridina shrimp
- Other non-Babaulti Caridina (no crossbreeding risk)
- Peaceful nano fish, snails, filter shrimp
Avoid predators and secure filter intakes to protect tiny larvae.
Diet & Feeding
Green Babaulti are omnivorous grazers that naturally feed on:
- Algae & biofilm
- Decaying plant matter & leaf litter
- Leftover food and detritus
Supplement with:
- High-quality shrimp pellets and wafers
- Blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, kale)
- Occasional protein foods 1–2× weekly
Avoid foods or additives containing copper.
Breeding Green Babaulti Shrimp
- Females carry 30–80 small eggs for ~4 weeks
- “Partially abbreviated” development — larvae hatch and develop fully in freshwater
- Larvae are tiny and benefit from mulm, biofilm, and powdered foods
- Use sponge-covered filter intakes and species-only tanks for best success
Supplemental Information
About the Babaulti Group
Caridina Babaulti is a diverse and poorly-documented group of shrimp, most originating from India. Though classified as Caridina, they are much hardier than typical Caridina shrimp and adapt well to a wide range of conditions.
Juveniles may appear pale, but adults develop strong coloration. Many individuals show green bodies with a layered Sunkist-orange tint, making them especially striking in planted or dark-substrate tanks.
FAQ: Green Babaulti Shrimp
Q: Will they crossbreed with Neocaridina?
A: No — they do not hybridize with Neocaridina or most other Caridina species.
Q: Do they always stay green?
A: No — color varies and may shift between olive, green, yellow, or orange tones.
Q: Are they good for planted tanks?
A: Yes — they graze algae and biofilm and are completely plant-safe.
Q: Are they wild-type?
A: Many available specimens still originate from wild populations, so shell or color imperfections are normal during acclimation.
